How the Philippine church shows compassion on destitutes
The Church of the Foursquare Gospel in the Philippines is one church that is really affecting the lives of the citizens in all ramifications of life. It recently organized a feeding program for destitutes in its district church in Cebu.
The church at the weekly program feeds over three hundred such children and this effort of the church is as a result of its determination to rid the streets of Philippine of beggars and other destitute children.
In his reaction during one of the feeding programs which is usually held in the church premises at the District Church in Cebu City, the Pastor in charge and the Director of the feeding project, Pastor Rejulson Lagunero, stated that the project is a vision from God which He has sustained for over ten years now through a direct partnership of the Christian Non Governmental Organization (NGO), Compassion International Philippine’s chapter.
He noted that Compassion International has never failed in its part to release the fund for the purpose of taking care of street children who are increasing per day.
“They have been very faithful in the release of the needed fund for the feeding project and we thank God for that. And on the part of my church, we have not relented in ensuring that the children whom the fund is meant for benefit from it accordingly,” he also said
Pastor Lagunero further said that the project costs the church over $20, 000 annually adding that the fund has always been spent judiciously, “At the end of any given quarter Compassion International comes around here to check our books, so we usually prepare a detail audit of how the fund is spent.”
He added that so far the number of children is in the increase and that God has enabled the church to reach out to them despite the limited resources in their disposal, “Most times we’re having close to four hundred kids gathering together here for the feeding program. As the news spreads more children come to benefit from it and we do not send them back, but try to accommodate them.”
In his words: “We don’t only feed these kids with material food, we also feed them with spiritual food that enables them to grow to spiritual maturity. Not just the kids alone, we also invite their parents/guardians and minister material food and the word of God to them also.”
According to Pastor Lagunero the church has capitalized on this by establishing a good number of home bible studies in various locations of the City of Cebu adding that it has been used to reach a good number of people with the love of Jesus Christ.
He stated that the church is planning to kick-off an educational project that’ll absorb some of the children, “We intend to start a mission school up to elementary level where the kids will receive qualitative education, and we just believe God for the fund to take-off”
